The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the replacement flagbearer for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), due to errors and illegalities found on his nomination form.
EC Chair Jean Mensa announced this at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.
Jean Mensa stated that despite allowing the party to correct discrepancies, certain irregularities could not be overlooked. This led to the EC’s decision to disqualify Kubi from the upcoming election.
The GFP experienced a significant setback with the loss of its founder and original leader, Akua Donkor.
The party was caught off guard by her sudden death on October 15, resulting in a frantic search for a replacement candidate for the upcoming December 2024 presidential election. Upon receiving the request, the EC gave the GFP a 10-day period to put forth a new candidate for flagbearer, resulting in Kubi being chosen for the role.
Upon further examination, the EC uncovered numerous issues with Kubi’s documentation that extended beyond mere clerical mistakes.
Jean Mensa, the EC Chair, clarified that although the party fixed some of the identified errors, other aspects were considered “illegitimate” and were not in accordance with electoral regulations.
Jean Mensa made it clear that the EC’s responsibility to maintain the integrity of the electoral process means that they cannot overlook any irregularities, even if a political party tries to correct them.
