The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised Ghanaians that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will be maintained in his administration, with appropriate funding to ensure its long-term success.
During a meeting with Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama addressed concerns about the policy. He dismissed claims that he would cancel Free SHS if elected, referring to them as a “political gimmick” intended to deceive the public.
Mahama emphasized that Free SHS is here to stay and has expanded educational opportunities, but stressed the importance of securing long-term funding to ensure its continued success.
We must ensure that adequate funding is provided to enhance its quality and sustain its operation.
Mahama’s comments show that the NDC is dedicated to supporting the Free SHS policy, but their main goal is to ensure that adequate funding is available to tackle the issues facing the program.
This position has been taken following the reaffirmed support for the policy by both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC, despite having differing opinions on how to improve its quality and implementation.
Mahama stressed the significance of quality education alongside ensuring funding for Free SHS, pointing out that properly financed initiatives would improve educational outcomes for students in Ghana.
He promised the people of Ghana that Free SHS would not only continue under his administration, but also be improved to better serve future generations.
