The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it is investigating allegations of illegal payments to some invigilators in the ongoing WASSCE.
This comes after WAEC expressed worry about some institutions’ strategies to aid students in cheating during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This year’s WASSCE, which began on August 19 and will end on September 20, has almost 460,000 candidates from 1,003 schools.
Speaking to the media, John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC National Office, said that intelligence has uncovered some unethical acts aimed at damaging the integrity of the important exams.
He said that schools charge candidates between GHS200 and 500 for invigilators’ assistance, assign teachers to invigilate their own topics, and register non-bona fide pupils.
He emphasised that it will not tolerate any breaches, warning individuals engaged will face punishments such as annulled results.
