The Circuit Court in Kwabenya has adjourned the case of Newwel Gavu to September 18, 2024, at the request of the Attorney General to allow time for filing the results of his mental evaluation.

Gavu was captured on video vandalising the Big Six effigies at the Kotoka International Airport roundabout, and the court referred him for a psychiatric test on September 2, 2024.

The report from the mental institution had not yet been filed when the case was called at 8:32 a.m. on Tuesday.

The investigator was not in court, but the state attorney, Natalie Korkor Hammond, stated in her submission that the decision to pursue the case would be based on the results of the mental examination.

In an interview with newsmen at the court, Hammond stated, “We are hoping to prosecute the case when we get the result. The last time he was in court, he was acting weird, so the judge requested a psychiatric assessment of him [Newwel Gavu] before a decision is made.”

The airport police detained Gavu on Saturday, August 31, 2024, after he was witnessed breaking the effigies of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the other five members of the Big Six at the airport roundabout. It remains unknown what inspired his conduct.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Airport Company Limited has begun plans to replace the monuments.
