The GFA has issued an apology to the people of Ghana in response to the Black Stars’ disappointing elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification.
The GFA released a press statement expressing its disappointment with the unsuccessful campaign, recognizing the disappointment it has brought to fans nationwide.
A portion of the statement acknowledged the disappointment and frustration caused by the failure, expressing shared pain and sadness with fans.
The 2025 AFCON will be held in Morocco from December 23, 2025, to January 18, 2026, making it the first time the country has hosted the tournament since 1988. The defending champion, Cote D’Ivoire, will face off against twenty-three other nations in the battle for the title.
Ghana’s qualification campaign came to a disappointing end, with the Black Stars finishing in last place in Group F after failing to secure a single win in six matches. The team’s disappointing showing so far has been compounded by their inability to secure any victories at home, a stark contrast to their former reputation as a dominant football nation.
The campaign saw a 1-0 loss to Angola in Kumasi and a goalless draw against Sudan. Additionally, there was a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Executive Council of the GFA met on Wednesday, November 20, to discuss the team’s future following the disappointing outcome.
In the face of widespread criticism, the council made the decision to keep Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, with the task of rebuilding the team falling on his shoulders.
This chapter represents a difficult period in Ghanaian football history, and fans are hopeful that the GFA and team management can bring back the Black Stars’ former glory.
