Tensions escalated at the Ledzokuku collation centre in the Greater Accra Region late on election day when military personnel allegedly discharged firearms following a confrontation with supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to eyewitness accounts, the conflict initiated when a contingent of NDC supporters insisted that approximately 15 military officers vacate the premises, contending that security was already being effectively managed by the Ghana Police Service.
The situation intensified when military personnel sought to enter the main collation area in their vehicles, but police officers present denied them access in an effort to maintain order.
During the altercation, gunfire was reportedly heard, instigating panic among election officials, party representatives, and observers at the site. While no injuries have been reported, the incident significantly heightened tensions and temporarily disrupted the collation process.
Security forces, including both police and military, acted promptly to restore order and ensure the safety of all individuals present at the centre. Officials from the Electoral Commission have reassured the public that the collation of results is continuing as planned, despite the disruption.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but investigations are reportedly in progress to clarify the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The Ghana Police Service and military leadership have been called upon to work together to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
