Mahama will not find peace until he approves the anti-gay bill – Sam George

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama will experience “no peace” until he enacts the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law, should he return to the presidency.

This assertion comes in light of Mahama’s recent remarks during a BBC interview, in which he stated that he would review the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-gay Bill, prior to making a definitive decision regarding its enactment.

While addressing reporters in Accra, Sam George, a prominent supporter of the bill, emphasized Mahama’s prior commitment to endorse the legislation, highlighting the public’s expectation for him to fulfill this promise.

“Mahama has made it clear that he intends to sign that bill and has no alternative but to do so. President Mahama will not find peace until he signs that bill. He has communicated to the clergy that, as a Christian and a member of the Assemblies of God, he does not oppose the bill. The former president’s comments to the BBC were a response to the question of why President Akufo-Addo has not yet signed the bill,” he remarked.

The bill, which has generated significant debate, seeks to protect traditional family values, although critics contend that it infringes upon human rights.

Passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, the bill’s future remains in limbo as President Akufo-Addo awaits the resolution of two Supreme Court cases that challenge its constitutionality.

A Supreme Court ruling on July 17 postponed decisions on these cases until all related legal matters are addressed.
