KT Hammond, Ursula, Dakoa Newman, Twum Barimah, and other important NPP figures drop out

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently facing considerable challenges, as numerous prominent Members of Parliament have lost their seats to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 parliamentary elections.

These losses indicate a notable shift in the political landscape, with only a limited number of NPP MPs successfully retaining their positions.

Significant Defeats for NPP

Among the key losses is KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa, who received 13,275 votes. He was defeated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, who secured 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) followed with a mere 346 votes.

Dakoa Newman, the MP for Okaikwei South, also lost her seat, adding to the list of prominent NPP figures who have been unseated. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the MP for Ablekuma West, had a disappointing showing, garnering only 26,575 votes.

In the Ablekuma West Constituency, NDC’s Rev Kweku Addo emerged victorious with 31,866 votes.

In Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey was defeated by the NDC’s Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu, who received 29,755 votes compared to Quartey’s 23,345. Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) managed only 163 votes. A total of 53,550 votes were cast in this constituency, with 287 votes declared invalid.

Sylvester Tetteh, the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, lost his seat after obtaining 27,888 votes, while his opponent, Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC, won decisively with 37,473 votes.

In Dormaa East, incumbent MP Twum Barima received 12,050 votes but was narrowly defeated by Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC, who secured 12,310 votes.

NDC’s Rising Influence

The NDC’s strong performance reflects a growing momentum in critical constituencies, presenting significant challenges for the NPP as they contend with the ramifications of these electoral losses.

These results highlight the necessity for the NPP to engage in self-reflection as the political environment continues to change.
