GYAMPO ADVISES NPP MPS TO RETURN TO PARLIAMENT AFTER THEIR DEFEAT

Political Science lecturer, Professor Ransford Gyampo from the University of Ghana, is urging the NPP caucus to come back to Parliament and engage in cooperative efforts with the NDC caucus for the benefit of the country.

Following a motion filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, Speaker Alban Bagbin has recently declared the parliamentary seats of four MPs vacant. His remarks are made in response to this development.

The motion cited constitutional provisions that require MPs to vacate their seats if they run as independent candidates or switch party affiliations.

The affected MPs are Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).

This decision has greatly changed the dynamics in Parliament, creating the possibility for the NDC-led Minority caucus to now potentially have a larger presence than the NPP-led Majority caucus.

During an interview on Friday, Prof. Gyampo pointed out that the NPP, having misinterpreted the law in a similar situation in 2020, should now accept this outcome peacefully.

He stressed the importance of the party avoiding excessive emotional reactions and concentrating on the country’s best interests.

In 2020, the NPP incorrectly applied and interpreted the law, and history is repeating itself today, to their detriment. He stated that they should simply lick their wounds and avoid being overly emotional.

He stressed the significance of both the NPP and NDC caucuses in Parliament collaborating to pass essential bills and conduct other legislative activities necessary for the advancement of the nation.

Return to Parliament and collaborate with the NDC Caucus to ensure that the outlined bills and other business are carried out in the best interests of Ghana. Prof Gyampo advised that staying at home and boycotting parliamentary sitting is not the best course of action.
