PROF. OQUAYE SAYS MINORITIES CANNOT DEMAND SEATS OF FOUR VACANT MP’S

Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, has criticized the Minority in Parliament for their call to expel four MPs from the chamber because they have chosen to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming December elections.

The Minority is pushing for the seats of Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison, Suhum MP Kwadwo Asante, and Amenfi Central MP Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah to be declared vacant.

They believe that since the Independent MP has chosen to run in the 2024 elections under the NPP’s ticket, the Fomena seat should be considered as vacant.

In a recent interview with Joy News, Prof. Smith discussed his findings on the topic. Mike Ocquaye, who had previously removed an NPP MP from the chamber for similar reasons four years ago, argued that the NDC did not have legitimate reasons to bring a motion that would impact members of the opposing party.

The law does not benefit him, so it is incorrect to say that it is designed for his advantage. That is the reason why I brought up the couple. He lacks a locus because he is not part of the party involved. Should it be you who mentions an issue in my home?

I disagree with your statement that I have a problem with my wife, as I believe there is no issue between us. Can you clarify what you mean by that?

On Tuesday, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, decided to postpone the ruling on the Minority’s petition to declare the seats of four Members of Parliament (MPs) vacant. Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has initiated a petition to invoke Article 97 (1)(G) of the Constitution, which requires an MP to vacate their seat if they abandon the political party they were elected under or choose to remain in Parliament as an independent candidate.
