BAGBIN RECOMMENDED THAT MP’S BALANCE THEIR TIME BETWEEN THEIR DUTIES IN PARLIAMENT AND THEIR CAMPAIGNING

With the 2024 general election approaching, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is reminding Members of Parliament to strike a careful balance between their legislative responsibilities and campaign duties.

During the 5th meeting of the Fourth session on Tuesday, October 15, Bagbin stressed the importance of MPs prioritizing their core legislative duties over electoral campaigns, especially when faced with urgent national issues.

In his address, Bagbin recognized the significant demands of the campaign season, acknowledging the intense concentration, commitment, and effort that MPs need to put in to win or maintain their seats in the upcoming elections.

Bagbin was clear in stating that the legislative agenda before Parliament is of equal, if not more, importance in the weeks leading up to the election.

“The legislative agenda ahead is significant, and it requires us to approach it with the necessary gravity.” We must prioritize bills of a time-sensitive nature such as the Environmental Protection Bill, Parliamentary Service Bill, and Parliamentary Transition Bill by scheduling them for debate and making decisions promptly.

It is natural for the demands of campaigning to require a significant amount of your time and energy. It is crucial that we strike a balance between these demands and our legislative duties.
