The forthcoming SIM card re-registration initiative scheduled for June aims to eliminate queues, thanks to an optimized process that enhances efficiency and convenience for citizens.
This information was shared by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, during his visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
The Minister indicated that citizens will have the option to register their SIM cards online, which will minimize the necessity for in-person visits to registration centers. The system is designed to automatically verify citizens’ information, thereby decreasing manual processing times.
This improved process is anticipated to save citizens time and enhance accuracy, ultimately making the registration experience more user-friendly.
Background on SIM Card Re-registration
The SIM card re-registration initiative commenced in 2021, with the government repeatedly extending the deadline due to low participation rates. This initiative mandates that all SIM card holders re-register their cards using their Ghana Card, the official national identity document.
A significant number of active SIM cards remained unregistered, leading the government to prolong the registration deadline.
This situation has raised concerns among some Ghanaians regarding data security and the risk of fraudulent registrations via the mobile application.
The government’s goal in implementing the SIM card registration initiative is to bolster national security by curbing fraudulent activities and crimes associated with unregistered SIM cards, as well as to enhance industry regulation by ensuring accurate data on legitimate SIMs.
