The government is poised to commence the implementation of the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategic Framework for the period of 2026 to 2030, following its endorsement by the Cabinet.
Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, emphasized that the current priority is to ensure that the framework leads to enhanced public services and development that effectively meets the needs of communities.
She made this statement while presiding over a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation, aimed at evaluating the progress of the new framework.
“The approval of the Framework marks a significant milestone. What is crucial now is its execution. Decentralisation should facilitate governance and public services being more accessible to the populace and ensure that development is more attuned to the requirements of communities throughout Ghana.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that successful decentralisation necessitates improved coordination among various sectors, including education, health, sanitation, infrastructure, finance, and local government, to effectively realize the framework’s objectives.
She also underscored the importance of citizen participation, accountability, and sufficient resources to ensure the effectiveness of the reforms.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured that the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee would persist in its efforts to guarantee that decentralisation fulfills its intended purpose.
“The existence of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee is precisely because effective decentralisation demands dialogue, coordination, and collaborative action across the Government.
The immediate task is to convert the new Framework into enhanced services and tangible improvements in the lives of individuals,” she stated.
