The Okada Riders Association has emphasized the critical role of training in improving safety within the commercial motorcycle industry.
This statement follows a recent proposal by the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to revise the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 LI 2180, which would restrict the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles to individuals aged 25 and older. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to enhance safety and accountability in the sector.
In an interview, Solomon Akpanaba, the Public Relations Officer of the Okada Riders Association, asserted that training is essential for fostering safety in the industry, rather than imposing age restrictions.
“We have consistently maintained that to instill discipline and significantly reduce road accidents, the focus should be on rider training, not age,” he stated.
He further explained, “An 18-year-old who has received proper training will understand the importance of waiting patiently at a traffic light rather than rushing to cross the road. The trained young rider will be equipped to make the right decisions.”
