The Chairman of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), George Siaja, has raised serious concerns about the working environment created by the current Ghana Football Association (GFA) administration, accusing it of fostering a culture of fear and intimidation that has left referees afraid to speak out.
In a strongly worded statement, Mr. Saijah claimed that referees across the country are being silenced by the threat of victimization, undermining not only their independence but also the integrity of football in Ghana.
“The current GFA administration has created an environment where referees feel silenced by the threat of victimization,” Saijah said. “Match officials now fear that raising legitimate concerns could cost them their careers or bring disciplinary action.”
According to Saijah, referees are increasingly hesitant to report issues ranging from poor officiating conditions to interference and pressure from football authorities. He argued that this toxic atmosphere is affecting morale and performance on the pitch, and warned that it could lead to long-term damage to Ghana’s footballing standards.
The allegations come amid growing scrutiny of officiating in both the Ghana Premier League and lower-tier competitions. Critics have pointed to controversial decisions, alleged bias, and the lack of accountability as ongoing issues eroding public trust in the game.
While Mr. Saijah did not mention specific instances of victimization, his remarks suggest a breakdown in the relationship between the Referees Association and the football governing body — a situation that could spark broader unrest within the officiating fraternity.
Calls are now mounting for the GFA to respond to the allegations and provide assurances that referees are free to carry out their duties without fear of retribution. Several former referees and football analysts have echoed Saijah’s concerns, emphasizing the need for urgent reforms to protect match officials and preserve the integrity of the sport.
As of publication, the GFA has not issued an official response to the allegations.
