The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has revealed its intention to broaden the scope of its complimentary dialysis program, thereby enhancing access to essential treatment for renal patients throughout the nation.
As part of this initiative, the NHIA will acquire additional dialysis machines and necessary supplies for healthcare facilities across the country.
This expansion aligns with the government’s overarching strategy to enhance access to vital healthcare services. Dr. Victor Bampoe, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, clarified that the program seeks to incorporate a greater number of patients suffering from kidney ailments into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He noted, ‘The previous administration initiated the free dialysis program, and there are currently 20 centers providing this service at no cost. The goal is to expand it to ensure sustainable funding.’ Dr. Bampoe further stated, ‘This will allow the program to function like any other illness covered by the NHIS, rather than relying on sporadic funding.’
This initiative is anticipated to alleviate the financial strain on patients and their families, many of whom face significant expenses related to dialysis treatment in Ghana.
