The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has refuted allegations that the former Chief Executive Officer of MASLOC, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, is receiving preferential treatment or is being detained in a private facility while serving her prison sentence.
In an interview conducted on June 24, the Minister asserted that Tamakloe-Attionu is in the custody of the Ghana Prisons Service and is serving her sentence in compliance with legal standards.
“From the day she arrived, she has been with us, and she continues to serve her term,” Mr. Muntaka stated during his conversation with JoyNews.
His remarks follow demands from certain opposition lawmakers for increased transparency regarding the specific location of the former MASLOC leader’s detention after her conviction in a fraud-related case associated with her time at the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).
Nevertheless, the Interior Minister contended that authorities are not required to publicly reveal the detention sites of high-profile inmates, citing security issues.
He explained that disclosing the locations of notable convicts could put them at risk and jeopardize their safety.
“In Ghana, we may not take the disclosure of someone’s detention location seriously, but in countries like America, revealing that a high-profile individual is in a specific location could even lead to that person’s death. Therefore, it is a matter of safety,” he clarified.
Mr. Muntaka emphasized that there is no foundation for the speculation that Tamakloe-Attionu is being kept outside the prison system.
“Trust us, she is serving her term. She is not in any private residence. She is with us,” he affirmed.
He also mentioned that anyone wishing to confirm her location or arrange a visit can do so by following the established protocols of the Ghana Prisons Service.
