The Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, has made a visit to the Northern Regional Office of the Ghana Statistical Service, marking his fourth regional office visit this year, following those in Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern regions.
After his visit, Dr. Iddrisu remarked that national development does not commence in Accra; instead, it begins at the grassroots level, within markets and communities, where individuals collect the data that informs every significant decision made in the country.
He acknowledged the Northern Region team, led by Mr. George Agbenyo, for their efforts in this regard.
They monitor prices, conduct surveys, and uncover the real narratives behind the statistics. This serves as the foundation upon which everything else is constructed, he emphasized.
Dr. Iddrisu expressed his appreciation for their warm reception and, more importantly, for the pride and dedication they exhibit in their work each day.
“On behalf of the GSS Governing Board: thank you. Your contributions are more significant than many realize. However, this visit was not solely about expressing gratitude; it was also about listening. Staff members openly discussed their challenges and proposed practical solutions to enhance our operations. This is precisely the purpose of these visits. We cannot address issues we are unaware of,” he stated.
To every regional statistician, he conveyed, “You are not merely gathering data; you are influencing decisions. What you generate dictates what receives funding, what is constructed, and what is repaired.”
Dr. Iddrisu pointed out that inadequate local data results in poor decision-making, with the most vulnerable communities bearing the consequences.
Conversely, robust local data leads to development that is targeted, equitable, and sustainable.
“As we strive to establish a world-class GSS, we are addressing the real challenges, including staff welfare, tools, systems, and support, incrementally and with urgency. Our regional offices will not be overlooked.
“They will be reinforced, supported, and positioned at the core of all our endeavors,” he concluded.
