The Appointments Committee of Parliament is anticipated to evaluate Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings today, Tuesday, August 25. This evaluation follows her nomination by President John Dramani Mahama for the position of Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology.
Her vetting occurs after Parliament was summoned from recess for a five-day session to address urgent parliamentary matters.
Upon the House’s reconvening on Monday, August 24, Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin directed the President’s ministerial nominations to the Appointments Committee for review and approval.
Additionally, the Appointments Committee is set to assess Mahama Ayariga as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, along with three nominee Justices of the Supreme Court.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, provided justification for the five-day emergency session of Parliament, which concludes on August 28, 2026.
The Speaker indicated that he had received a letter from President John Dramani Mahama dated August 11, 2026, requesting the recall of Parliament to deliberate on urgent issues prior to the scheduled recall in October 2026.
In welcoming Members of Parliament back from their constituencies for the emergency session, the Speaker outlined the urgent matters to be addressed, including the consideration and passage of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
Furthermore, the Speaker mentioned that the House is expected to review three nominees for Justices of the Supreme Court: Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Justice Anthony Forson Junior.
In relation to the positions of Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business within the House, the Speaker clarified that although Mahama Ayariga has been nominated by the President for the role of Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, he remains in the Majority Leader’s position until the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) officially communicates any changes to the House.
