The Accra High Court has acquitted and released James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, effectively concluding a legal struggle that lasted three years.
Quayson faced multiple criminal allegations, including perjury, deception of a public officer, and false declaration for office.
However, Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh, who presided over the case, determined that the prosecution did not provide adequate evidence to support the charges.
Consequently, Quayson will not be required to present a defense.
The legal issues for the MP began when the Supreme Court annulled his initial election victory in 2020, citing his dual citizenship at the time of his nomination as a violation of Ghana’s electoral laws.
In 2023, his name was removed from the list of Members of Parliament.
Despite this challenge, Quayson successfully contested and regained the Assin North seat in a by-election later that same year.
The criminal charges brought against him in 2022, however, continued to overshadow his political career until this recent ruling.
Although the new Attorney General proposed to drop the case, Quayson chose to fight for his innocence in court instead.
