The government has formally disbanded the National Cathedral Secretariat, a venture launched by former President Nana Akufo-Addo intended to serve as a national Christian worship center and a representation of Ghana’s religious legacy.
The closure of the National Cathedral Secretariat signifies a notable change in the government’s approach to this contentious initiative. Originally promoted by former President Akufo-Addo, the project was envisioned as a significant religious emblem for Ghana.
Nonetheless, it has encountered considerable backlash due to concerns regarding its financial management and implementation, with numerous allegations of fiscal mismanagement and corruption emerging during its progression.
In an interview, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, affirmed that the government will cease funding for the now-abandoned National Cathedral project.
He emphasized that this decision aligns with the stance consistently advocated by President John Dramani Mahama, who has made it clear that taxpayer funds will not be allocated to the project in the future.
