President John Dramani Mahama has justified the elimination of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy), characterizing it as a strategic initiative designed to improve digital financial services in Ghana.
The E-levy, which imposed a 1% tax on transactions carried out via electronic or digital platforms, was officially repealed on April 2, 2025.
This decision has elicited a range of responses, with some critics arguing that the levy was a crucial revenue source for the government. However, President Mahama underscored that this action would enhance public access to services.
He expressed these views during his speech at the Czech-Ghana Business Cooperation Seminar, which took place at the Mövenpick Hotel on Wednesday, April 9.
“Ghana is experiencing a swift digital transformation in financial and digital services. The recent repeal of the e-levy on electronic transactions, along with other taxes, is expected to foster further growth and inclusivity in digital financial services,” President Mahama remarked.
