Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general elections, has urged the victims of the Adum Bluelight fire incident in Kumasi’s Central Business District to stay united in their efforts to rebuild the market.
During his visit to the site on Wednesday, March 2, 2024, to express his condolences to the affected individuals, the former Manhyia South MP pledged his support for their restoration efforts.
The traders in the Adum Bluelight area were left in despair after a fire destroyed a significant portion of the market in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025.
Following his visit to the affected area, Dr. Opoku Prempeh contributed GH₵50,000 and 500 bags of cement to assist the traders in their rebuilding initiatives.
He also promised that an additional GH₵100,000 would be drawn from the Manhyia South MP’s Common Fund to further support the reconstruction.
In his remarks after the donation, he encouraged the traders to maintain their unity and avoid any divisions that could impede their recovery efforts.
“I am aware that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the regional minister, Kennedy Agyapong, and others have come to visit you. Even President Mahama and several NPP executives have shown their support. Therefore, it would not be right for me to stay away,” he stated.
“I understand that your struggles are my struggles as well. I have personally felt the impact of this fire. It is only through experiencing such loss that one can truly appreciate the pain it brings. I pray that God grants you comfort and helps you regain your footing. Those of us engaged in politics must remember that it is the people we serve who build a nation, not just financial resources,” he added.
Additionally, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, contributed 100 bags of cement to the fire victims as part of his commitment to support the market’s reconstruction.
