The National Democratic Congress has officially renamed its national headquarters to pay tribute to its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and has unveiled a bust of the late former President as part of the activities commemorating his lasting legacy.
The ceremony took place on Monday, June 22, 2026, as part of a series of events organized to celebrate what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday.
Under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” the commemoration aims to honor the life, leadership, and contributions of the late statesman to Ghana’s political development and democratic governance.
The day commenced with the formal renaming of the party’s headquarters in Rawlings’ honor, a symbolic act intended to preserve the memory of the individual widely recognized for founding the NDC and influencing Ghana’s Fourth Republic. This was succeeded by the unveiling of a bust dedicated to him at the party’s headquarters.
Senior party officials, supporters, and dignitaries convened for the ceremony, which emphasized Rawlings’ impact on Ghana’s democratic progress and the ongoing significance of his ideals within the party.
President John Dramani Mahama is anticipated to participate in the event and deliver a speech, alongside other prominent party figures, as part of the tributes to the former military leader-turned-democrat.
Rawlings, who passed away in November 2020, is regarded as one of the most significant figures in Ghana’s modern political landscape. He initially led the country as a military ruler before facilitating the transition to constitutional governance and serving as Ghana’s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.
The renaming of the party headquarters and the bust unveiling highlight the NDC’s commitment to honoring the legacy of its founder and reaffirming the values and principles he advocated throughout his public service.
