The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Administrator, Mr. Paul Adjei, has emphasized the increasing expenses associated with finalizing stalled educational projects.
He noted that numerous projects awarded several years ago can no longer be completed within their initial contract amounts due to escalating costs of materials and construction.
He urged the establishment of a dedicated fund to finish abandoned projects and underscored the necessity for “sustained investment in classrooms, schools, and other educational infrastructure to enhance learning outcomes and support national development.”
He made these remarks during the Select Committee on Education’s visit to the GETFund, which was part of their monitoring activities on the second day, engaging with officials from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), and the National Schools Inspectorate Authority.
The Chairman, Nortsu-Kotoe Kwasi Peter, stated that the purpose of the exercise was to extend beyond formal presentations, allowing members to interact directly with agency officials and gain a deeper understanding of challenges that may not be fully reflected in written reports. The Committee addressed issues related to standards, accountability, and the credibility of tertiary education.
Kingsley Nyarko expressed concerns regarding academic dishonesty, including instances of students hiring others to complete assignments, and advocated for more robust measures to protect the integrity of academic qualifications.
He also encouraged GTEC to work in conjunction with other relevant institutions to ensure that satellite campuses operated by public universities adhere to the necessary standards.
Ranking Member, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, called for a reliable system to rank university programs based on the employment outcomes of graduates, enabling students and parents to evaluate whether graduates from specific programs are securing employment.
