The Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) has initiated a demolition operation to eliminate unauthorized structures situated on or near government properties within the metropolis, which include offices, schools, and hospitals.
This action follows a previous moratorium imposed in July 2025 by the Assembly, which halted the issuance of new temporary development permits in the region, with the objective of controlling the swift increase of illegal constructions throughout Tema.
In an explanation provided to Citi News on Friday, October 31, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Ebi Bright, stated that this operation is part of the government’s extensive policy aimed at safeguarding state lands, installations, and designated protected areas by designating them as security zones.
While some individuals have praised the Assembly’s decision, others have voiced their dissatisfaction, arguing that they were not given sufficient notice to vacate prior to the commencement of the demolitions.
Abraham Nii Adjei Tawiah, the President of the Tema Youth Association, expressed his commitment to supporting the youth in the metropolis regarding this initiative.
He mentioned that the association intends to work in conjunction with the Assembly by establishing community watch teams to facilitate the effective execution of the program.
