The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has categorically dismissed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, asserting that the NPP candidate, Akua Afriyie, legitimately won the 2024 election.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, July 8, Mr. Kodua contended that the NPP achieved a definitive victory in the constituency and accused the EC of disregarding the electorate’s wishes by mandating a rerun.
“For us in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), we are steadfast and we are confident that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections by a margin of 414 votes. This assertion is grounded in facts and figures. Yesterday, during the meeting of the National Executive Committee, we stated that we will not be intimidated under any circumstances.
“Under no circumstances will we participate in a rerun. We will not agree to any rerun. The New Patriotic Party will not consent to any rerun. We have emerged victorious in the elections. What we request from the Electoral Commission is to adhere to the court’s directive to complete the collation process and officially declare our candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North,” declared the NPP General Secretary.
Mr. Kodua characterized the EC’s decision as unjust and urged the Commission to operate in alignment with the facts and evidence presented throughout the electoral process.
The EC had previously announced a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North, citing irregularities in the collation process—specifically, the lack of validation by certain Presiding Officers on scanned results.
Nevertheless, the NPP asserts that all requisite procedures were adhered to and that the party’s agents, along with EC officials, had properly verified and signed the results at the polling stations in question.
Mr. Kodua’s statements contribute to the increasing political tension regarding the disputed constituency, as the NPP insists that any additional postponement in announcing Akua Afriyie as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North represents a breach of the electoral mandate given by the constituents.
The Electoral Commission has not yet provided a formal response to the NPP’s requests.
