The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that the State Transport Company (STC) is expected to acquire 140 new buses in the next two months as part of the government’s initiative to enhance public transportation and address the growing challenges faced by commuters and long-distance travelers nationwide.
This announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about the availability, reliability, and convenience of public transportation, especially as demand for intercity travel continues to rise.
Numerous commuters have voiced their dissatisfaction with insufficient transport services, overcrowding, and delays, leading to calls for immediate actions to fortify the nation’s public transport system.
In an interview, June 8, the Transport Minister detailed the measures being implemented by the government to broaden the national transport fleet and enhance mobility for Ghanaians.
His comments also aimed to alleviate concerns regarding the deployment of the 100 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses that were commissioned earlier this year.
The Minister stated that the government’s transport expansion plan extends beyond the recently launched MMT buses and encompasses a substantial investment in the State Transport Company to improve intercity transportation services.
“We are aware of the challenges we face in transportation, but we are confident that the next 100 MMT buses will arrive within the next two months, and STC will also receive 140 buses, allowing us to have more high-occupancy buses.”
The anticipated addition of these buses is expected to enhance transport capacity, improve connectivity between major towns and cities, and alleviate pressure on the current public transport services.
