Abraham Amaliba, the Acting Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), has called on Okada and Pragyia riders to adhere to road traffic laws, cautioning that noncompliance will result in arrests and legal action by the police.
He emphasized that the NRSA intends to provide training for all riders on road safety and mandates the use of uniforms and helmets prior to the issuance of specialized license plates for their motorcycles by the DVLA.
During a meeting with the Koforidua branch of the Tricycle Operators Association, aimed at reducing accidents in the area, Amaliba mentioned that discussions are underway regarding the establishment of unions for registration purposes.
“The legalization process will entail certain restrictions. It will not be an unrestricted environment as it currently stands. We will provide training on road safety, as many of you are riding without proper knowledge after acquiring your motorbikes.
“We will require you to wear a designated uniform and a specific type of helmet. Subsequently, the DVLA will issue you a special number plate and will also provide training on safe riding practices. The police will start taking action against those who do not comply with road traffic regulations.”
