Flagbearer candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will participate in a balloting process on Friday, October 10, 2025, to determine their positions on the ballot paper in anticipation of the party’s presidential primary set for January 31, 2026.
The National Elections Committee is scheduled to convene with the five candidates or their representatives at the party’s headquarters in Accra to carry out this process.
On Thursday, October 9, 2025, Haruna Mohammed, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, stated that the balloting would include all candidates who have satisfied the party’s criteria.
“All candidates who have adhered to the guidelines issued on July 29 and have complied with them will participate in the balloting today. No one will be exempt from any specific guideline of the party,” Mr. Mohammed remarked.
He underscored that the procedures align with the party’s constitution and must be honored by all participants.
“These guidelines are rooted in the constitution, and every member aspiring to lead the party into the 2028 elections must comply with them,” he added.
In the meantime, Paul Abdul Rahman Issah Dowuona, the Communications Director for Kwabena Agyepong’s campaign team, has reiterated that Mr. Agyepong is steadfastly in the race despite the recent controversy regarding the GH₵4 million development fee.
“Regarding the GH₵4 million payment issue — he has clearly stated that, in principle, he opposes it. The party has made its position known, asserting that this amount must be paid,” Mr. Dowuona clarified.
He mentioned that Mr. Agyepong had articulated his position on this issue during his vetting, indicating that while he disagreed with the fee as a condition for contesting, he remains open to supporting the party’s development in alternative ways.
Mr. Dowuona clarified that the matter concerning the GH₵4 million payment is one he fundamentally opposes. The party has articulated its position, asserting that this amount must be paid.
He noted that Mr. Agyepong had conveyed his viewpoint during the vetting process, indicating that although he disagreed with the fee as a requirement for candidacy, he was still prepared to assist the party’s development in alternative ways.
During the vetting, he was questioned, and he clearly stated his stance. He also pledged that if it pertained to a development fee, he would significantly contribute to the party’s development when necessary. His primary concern has consistently been that such a fee should not be a condition for contesting the party’s flagbearership.
Currently, five candidates have announced their intentions to vie for the NPP’s flagbearer position for the 2028 elections. These candidates include Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong.
The results of the balloting will establish the sequence in which the five NPP flagbearer candidates will be listed on the ballot for the forthcoming election.
