Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption (CMaC), Edem Senanu, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his dedication to accelerating the prosecution of public officials involved in the misuse or mismanagement of state resources.
President Mahama, while voicing concern over the persistent financial irregularities highlighted in the Auditor-General’s report, revealed intentions to work alongside the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Minister for Justice, and other pertinent stakeholders to facilitate the expedited prosecution of such cases.
In response to the announcement, Mr. Senanu characterized the President’s initiative as a significant and pragmatic measure aimed at enhancing accountability and safeguarding public funds.
“I find it to be extremely praiseworthy. Indeed, many of us have perceived that this farce of having a Public Accounts Committee convene, point out figures, and then a year later reveal even larger figures, without witnessing progress in recovering the funds or holding wrongdoers accountable, does not bode well for governance,” he stated.
He expressed concern over the entrenched culture of impunity related to financial mismanagement within the public sector, emphasizing that repeated audit findings without repercussions have eroded public confidence in state institutions.
“All of these contribute to a culture of impunity. Therefore, the manner in which the President intends to address this issue is indeed commendable,” Mr. Senanu concluded.
