Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that the telecommunications leader MTN plans to set up its second artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory in Africa, selecting Ghana as the site for this initiative.
In an interview on Monday, April 14, Sam George pointed out that MTN currently has only one AI lab on the continent, which is situated in South Africa.
The choice to establish the second facility in Ghana highlights the nation’s increasing significance in the fields of AI research and innovation.
He referred to the forthcoming AI lab as a “center of excellence,” which is expected to promote progress in AI technology, machine learning, and digital transformation.
This initiative aligns with Ghana’s broader goal of becoming a prominent hub for AI development across Africa.
The creation of the AI lab is expected to encourage collaboration among industry professionals, researchers, and technology innovators, thereby enhancing Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
Sam George shared with host Bernard Avle, “MTN is constructing its second AI lab in all of Africa. Currently, there is only one in South Africa. They are bringing the second one to Ghana, and it will serve as a center of excellence.”
