The government has established the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, referred to as Mahama Cares, to offer financial assistance to individuals afflicted with chronic illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart diseases.
The launch event occurred at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. During the inauguration of the Fund, President John Dramani Mahama urged the private sector to engage in corporate social responsibility initiatives in support of Mahama Cares.
He stated, ‘I encourage corporate Ghana, including businesses, mining companies, banks, and other enterprises, to recognize that this Ghana Medical Trust Fund is designed to benefit your clients who deposit their funds in your banks or engage in business with you. Some of these individuals may even be your own employees.’
As part of your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), it is important to view any contributions as investments in your own employees or customers.
Therefore, I urge all corporations in Ghana, both private and public, to allocate a portion of their annual CSR contributions to the Ghana Medical Fund at the end of the year, as it will significantly benefit the nation,” he remarked.
Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized that this initiative is long overdue, highlighting its purpose of promoting equitable access to healthcare, especially for individuals encountering financial obstacles to treatment.
In his introductory comments, the sector Minister disclosed that a draft bill outlining the management framework of the fund will be submitted to parliament.
“The draft bill for the Mahama Care is prepared and will be presented as soon as Parliament reconvenes,” he announced. He further noted: “Crucially, the previous cap on the national health insurance fund has been lifted.
This change has released considerable resources to ensure that a dedicated fund will now support the Mahama Care Programme.
