Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, along with other government officials, has paid a visit to the residence of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, to express their condolences to the Rawlings family following her demise.
The delegation, which included senior government officials and representatives from the party, conveyed their sympathies and signed a condolence book in memory of the late stateswoman. The family expressed their appreciation for the support shown during this time of mourning.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the spouse of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76.
As Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, she served during both military and civilian governments led by her husband — spanning the AFRC and PNDC periods through to the Fourth Republic.
A trailblazer in women’s empowerment, Nana Konadu established the 31st December Women’s Movement, which advocated for women’s rights, social and economic advancement, and political engagement.
In 2012, she founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) and made history as Ghana’s first female presidential candidate in that same year. In 2018, she released It Takes a Woman, a biography detailing her life and her commitment to gender equality.
Nana Konadu leaves a legacy characterized by resilience, leadership, and dedication to Ghana. The family will announce funeral arrangements in due course.
