The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, commonly referred to as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment after a jury of seven members reached a 5–2 majority verdict, finding him guilty of murder.
Inspector Twumasi was convicted for the deadly shooting of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah — known as Maadwoa — near her home in Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023. This incident ignited national outrage and heightened public concern regarding gun violence and professional misconduct within the security forces.
Although the police officer initially confessed to the shooting, he asserted that it was unintentional. He subsequently entered a plea of not guilty, which led to a comprehensive trial before the jury.
Following nearly three years of legal proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu rendered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025.
Family members of the deceased, Victoria Dapaah, who filled the courtroom, expressed their relief and gratitude regarding the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, extended her thanks to the media for their unwavering coverage of the case, characterizing the judgment as “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.
Background
Twenty-six-year-old Victoria Dapaah, affectionately known as Maa Adwoa, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, on April 20, 2023, in Adum — just a short distance from her home.
During his initial court appearance, Inspector Twumasi acknowledged the shooting but contended that he did not intend to kill “his lover.”
Investigations conducted by the prosecution revealed that the incident stemmed from a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt. The police officer had reportedly requested a refund from the victim, and when she failed to repay the sum, he allegedly shot her, leading to her death.
