The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has announced that the investigations into the violence related to the 2020 elections in the Odododiodio constituency have been completed, resulting in the Attorney-General’s Department prosecuting three suspects.
During a press briefing held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Mr. Muntaka stated that although the Odododiodio election experienced a significant voter turnout and fierce political rivalry, it was also overshadowed by violent occurrences that resulted in fatalities and injuries to numerous individuals.
He disclosed that the investigations were unable to pinpoint those directly accountable for the deaths of Rita Otoo and Emmanuel Dompreh; however, three individuals who were found to have discharged firearms into a crowd, causing injuries to others, have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. These suspects have been remanded to stand trial at the High Court, Criminal Court 1, in Accra.
Mr. Muntaka further indicated that the investigations uncovered that three incidents, which led to four fatalities, were associated with armed police patrol teams, while military personnel were implicated in three incidents that resulted in three deaths during efforts to manage violent crowds.
Moreover, four additional cases, which resulted in five deaths, were linked to party supporters who utilized firearms during confrontations, and two individuals were lynched during clashes between opposing groups.
“The investigation into one of the incidents that occurred during the 2020 General Election in Odododiodio has been finalized. The Attorney-General is presently prosecuting three individuals who are facing trial at the High Court, Criminal Division, in Accra,” the Minister affirmed.
He further noted that 21 suspects were identified through witness testimonies, forensic and ballistic analyses, as well as crime scene reconstructions, which led to the establishment of 11 new case files to facilitate prosecution.
“To date, four of the identified suspects have been apprehended and provided with Police Enquiry Bail to facilitate further investigations and aid in locating their accomplices. Five additional suspects are currently in remand in prison custody, and arrest warrants have been issued for the remaining individuals,” he remarked.
The Interior Minister additionally noted that the Task Force conducting the investigation into the violence has suggested financial compensation for the families of the deceased, while stating that compensation for the injured will be contingent upon the results of the ongoing court proceedings.
