The government plans to enhance investment in renewable energy infrastructure for island and lake communities, aiming to electrify an additional 150 off-grid locations nationwide.
This announcement follows the launch of mini-grid electrification projects in three island communities—Azizakpe, Alorkem, and Aflive—located in the Ada East District. These projects, financed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), provide electricity to these communities for the first time.
During the commissioning ceremony, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, stated that this initiative represents a crucial advancement in boosting economic activities and improving livelihoods in remote areas.
He highlighted that the electrification initiative is in line with the government’s comprehensive energy policy objectives.
“Shortly, we will introduce an ambitious program aimed at providing electricity access to over 250,000 residents across 150 island and lake communities.

“This is merely the beginning. We are committed to an ambitious and proactive program with the ultimate goal of connecting 150 island and lake communities to electricity,” he remarked.
The Minister noted that this initiative will not only broaden the reach of renewable energy but also expedite Ghana’s progress toward energy equity and inclusion.
“This initiative will undoubtedly extend renewable energy access to more underserved regions, propelling our efforts toward energy equity and inclusion, and helping us achieve our primary goal of 99.8% electricity access by our ‘light for life’ policy,” John Jinapor added.
The newly established mini-grids are anticipated to enhance productivity, support small enterprises, and elevate living standards in the communities that benefit from them.
