The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed the passing of one of its officers and the injury of another following a shooting incident that occurred in Nangani, located in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.
The officers involved — Assistant Immigration Control Officer (AICO I) Philip Lartey and AICO I Cosmos Dakurah — were reportedly ambushed by unidentified assailants while returning from duty on a motorbike on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m.
According to a statement released on November 3, 2025, by the Public Affairs Department of the Service, both officers suffered gunshot wounds and were initially treated at the Basyonde Clinic in Tempane before being transferred to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.
“Regrettably, AICO I Cosmos Dakurah later succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the early hours of November 3, 2025,” the statement indicated.
The GIS has noted that it is collaborating closely with the Ghana Police Service to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) have also dispatched a team from their national headquarters to the Upper East Region to assist with investigations and to provide reassurance to officers affected by this tragic incident.
The Service has expressed its condolences to the grieving family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased officer, characterizing his death as a significant loss.
“The GIS commends the courage and commitment of its officers and strongly condemns, in the most emphatic terms, any act of violence directed against its personnel, who serve with dedication to protect the nation’s territorial integrity,” the statement further added.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all immigration officers throughout the country.
