The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has officially announced that the Greater Accra Region is now free of cholera, having gone 30 consecutive days without any reported cases.
This declaration was made during a media workshop focused on enhancing cholera risk communication within the region.
In an interview, Akumatey Tetteh, the Greater Accra Regional EPI Manager, affirmed this significant achievement, labeling it a notable public health success.
“I can assert with confidence that Greater Accra is currently cholera-free,” Tetteh stated. “In the first and second quarters of this year, we documented 151 cases and 10 fatalities. However, there have been no new cases reported to date. Our monitoring indicates zero cholera incidents, and we are currently safe.”
Eunice Joan Teah Dzagli, the Greater Accra Regional Health Promotion Officer, emphasized the region’s dedication to sustaining this status, particularly during the rainy season.
“Our goal is to maintain zero cholera cases throughout this rainy season,” she remarked. “Achieving this objective necessitates a collaborative effort from the media, religious organizations, and various agencies. We are determined not to revert to the difficulties we encountered in November, December, and January.”
This declaration represents a crucial advancement in the region’s initiatives to enhance public health and avert future outbreaks.
