The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has emphasized the significance of enhancing resilience and investing in disaster risk reduction initiatives in Ghana.
During the observance of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) in Accra, the Minister pointed out the necessity for a proactive strategy in disaster management, as opposed to depending on reactive solutions.
Under the theme, “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” the Minister asserted that investing in resilience is vital for sustainable development, noting that any funds allocated for prevention and preparedness can save far more than what would be lost in disaster response and recovery efforts.
Muntaka acknowledged that Ghana has made notable strides in improving disaster risk management and resilience-building, which includes projects like the flood mitigation initiatives by the Ghana Hydrological Authority and the Ghana Urban Resilience and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
However, the Minister stressed that further actions are required, such as a stronger integration of Disaster Risk Reduction into local governance frameworks, increased domestic funding for resilience projects, and the encouragement of public-private partnerships that harness innovation and investment for risk mitigation.
The Acting Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, reiterated NADMO’s dedication to safeguarding lives and modernizing emergency response mechanisms in the nation.
He urged all citizens to support NADMO as the Government endeavours to enhance the operations of NADMO.
