Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has indicated that the government has made notable advancements in addressing the problem of unpaid salaries and allowances impacting health workers nationwide.
In a media briefing held in Accra on Monday, October 13, Mr. Akandoh disclosed that the Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance for the remuneration of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who commenced their national service in early 2024.
Additionally, he revealed that the Finance Ministry has also granted financial clearance for 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and assigned in late 2024, emphasizing that their clearance, which was set to expire on December 31, 2024, has now been extended to ensure complete payment.
“Financial clearance has been secured for the payment of the 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began their national service in early 2024. Financial clearance has also been secured for 13,500 individuals recruited and posted late last year [2024], with their financial clearance originally expiring on December 31, 2024,” he stated.
The Minister reassured all affected personnel that the government is dedicated to resolving the outstanding salary arrears and enhancing systems to avert future issues.
“The Ministry is implementing measures as part of a comprehensive strategy to fortify Ghana’s health system and ensure the well-being of its workforce,” he stated.
Mr. Akandoh encouraged health workers to maintain their composure and continue to perform their duties diligently while directing any unresolved issues through the proper channels for swift resolution.
