Former Minister for Defence and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to urgently appoint a permanent Minister for Defence to lead efforts in tackling emerging security threats nationwide.
Following the unfortunate passing of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in a helicopter accident on August 6, 2025, President Mahama designated the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to serve as the acting Defence Minister. Since that time, the Defence Ministry has lacked a permanent minister.
During a press conference with journalists in Parliament on Friday, October 24, Nitiwul voiced his concerns regarding the extended delay in appointing a substantive minister, warning that this could hinder the ministry’s effective operation.
“The deputy cannot fulfill the role of the defence minister. This is why the president appointed the finance minister to serve as the interim defence minister. We all recognize that the finance minister has limited availability. I believe it is time for the president to seek and nominate someone to take over the position,” he stated.
The former Defence Minister further emphasized that the increasing insecurity in the West African sub-region necessitates strong and decisive leadership at Ghana’s Defence Ministry.
“In the West African region, terrorism is becoming widespread. While we are currently enjoying peace, we are constantly threatened by surrounding insecurities, and I believe we require someone who can provide effective leadership,” Nitiwul asserted.
He urged President Mahama to take prompt action, whether by promoting the current deputy minister or appointing a new candidate, to ensure stability and continuity within the country’s defence administration.
“That prolonged delay is counterproductive,” he warned.
