The Renal Unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has been closed for more than a week, causing significant distress and uncertainty for patients reliant on essential dialysis treatments.
Patients have expressed their frustration regarding the lack of communication from hospital officials, as no formal explanation has been given for the abrupt closure.
This absence of information has intensified worries about the health risks linked to postponed or missed treatments.
Kojo Baffour Ahenkora, the spokesperson for the Renal Patients Association, has confirmed the ongoing closure and expressed concern over its impact on patients.
He reported that members are facing heightened anxiety, worsening health, and increased complications due to the interruption of their treatment regimens. ‘Some of my patients are reporting insomnia, nighttime fatigue, loss of appetite, and vomiting. The complaints are numerous and distressing.
This situation is detrimental to us, yet we find ourselves with limited options. We either need to find funds to seek care at a private facility, where costs start at GHS 700, or we must endure this situation.
Korle-Bu offers more affordable care, and in times like this, communication is crucial.
We are an association; we should be consulted and informed about the challenges being faced and the steps being taken to resolve them, so we can prepare ourselves financially and seek alternative care,’ he stated.
In light of the increasing pressure, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer is currently engaging with management to address the situation and respond to the growing concerns of patients and their families.
