The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, is anticipated to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.
This follows a caution issued by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on Friday, October 3, 2025. He indicated that Chairman Wontumi would face arrest if he failed to appear, as charges have already been formalized.
The investigation pertains to Akonta Mining Limited, a company associated with the NPP chairman, which is currently under scrutiny for purported illegal mining operations.
The Attorney General stated that the case had experienced delays due to essential dockets being hidden under the previous administration.
In an interview conducted on Sunday, October 5, Chairman Wontumi’s attorney, Andy Appiah Kubi, affirmed that his client intends to comply with the summons.
He characterized the Attorney General’s warning as unwarranted, asserting that his client has consistently cooperated with investigators.
“We have been instructed to appear at the police CID in Accra, and we are prepared to do so, arriving at 10 am at the police CID headquarters.
“This statement from the Attorney General is surprising to me. I reiterated that we respect the invitation and will comply, but I believe the warning that accompanied that announcement was unnecessary,” he remarked, adding, “We are in no way going to disregard the invitation.”
