President John Dramani Mahama has conveyed his confidence in Dr. Johnson Asiama’s leadership as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG). This comes despite the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) concerns over the legality and appropriateness of his appointment.
The President’s endorsement arrives in the midst of a heated debate over Dr. Asiama’s past legal challenges and his capacity to navigate Ghana’s financial sector through the current crisis.
The Minority in Parliament has been outspoken in its criticism of Dr. Asiama’s appointment, highlighting his previous involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, for which he was facing trial until the government withdrew all charges.
The NPP contends that Dr. Asiama’s legal history renders him unfit for the position of BoG Governor, a role that necessitates impeccable integrity and trustworthiness.
However, during the swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor and Dr. Zakari Mumuni as First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, President Mahama defended Dr. Asiama’s appointment, emphasizing the necessity for experienced and decisive leadership to tackle the challenges confronting Ghana’s financial sector.
“Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis, and the task ahead demands experience foresight and decisive leadership. With Dr. Asiama heading the Bank of Ghana, I am confident that we will rebuild trust in the institution, restore stability, and put our economy back on the path of sustained growth.
“I trust him with this responsibility, knowing that he will serve with greater diligence and excellence,” he stated.
