The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed strong disapproval of the establishment of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, deeming it “illegal and unconstitutional.”
He called upon Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Justice Minister-Designate, to reevaluate the committee’s functions and to ensure that established state institutions are permitted to carry out their designated responsibilities without undue interference.
During a parliamentary session on January 21, 2025, which focused on the approval of the first group of vetted ministers, Afenyo-Markin asserted that the creation of the ORAL committee threatens the democratic foundations of Ghana.
He argued that circumventing established institutions could undermine public trust in governance.
In his address, the Minority Leader also urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to refrain from repeating the errors of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, highlighting the necessity of upholding democratic and constitutional standards.
“Mr. Speaker, that so-called ORAL committee, which claims to pursue looted assets, must be warned that it operates outside the bounds of the constitution and legality. I hope that my esteemed colleague, Dr. Dominic Ayine, upon assuming office, will review the actions of this unlawful and unconstitutional entity.
“Restore order and allow the state institutions, which are empowered to investigate, to follow due process and prosecute when necessary.
“The trajectory of this ORAL initiative will not benefit our democracy. Today, you are in power; tomorrow, you may find yourselves in opposition. Treat others as you would wish to be treated in all circumstances. If the NPP made certain errors while in power, it is not necessary to continue down that path. Seek justice for all.”
