Tema ECG experiences cable loss due to a fire incident

The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has experienced a fire incident that has severely damaged sections of its primary cables located behind the Lube Oil Company in Tema, within the Greater Accra Region.

The fire, which was first reported around 5 PM on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, has destroyed the cables beyond repair, necessitating their complete replacement.

As a result of this incident, temporary power outages occurred for customers in areas including Adjetey Ansah, the Naval Quarters, Aunty Kate, Leonardo, and Bankuman, with some residents experiencing unresolved power issues until the following day. However, by the morning of Wednesday, January 1, 2025, power supply had been restored to all affected customers.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, the Public Relations Officer for the Tema Region of the power distributor, expressed gratitude to the Ghana National Fire Service for their prompt response in controlling the blaze.

When inquired about the financial implications of the damaged cables, Ms. Mensah stated, “The extent of damage is still being assessed. Until this assessment is completed, it will be challenging to determine the associated costs.”

She further noted that “the costs will be significant due to the major extent of the damage.” Additionally, she extended her apologies to the customers who were left without power to celebrate the new year as a result of this incident.

The Public Relations Officer also urged the public to exercise caution regarding the handling of open flames during dry weather conditions, as such situations can easily lead to fires that may cause extensive property damage and disrupt businesses.
