The Planning Committee responsible for the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament has expressed its commitment to ensuring a smooth and peaceful democratic transition.
The official dissolution of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic is scheduled for Monday, January 6, 2025. Following this, the newly elected Members of the 9th Parliament will gather at 11:00 PM to elect a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers.
In a statement to the media, Camillo Pwamang, the Deputy Coordinator for the Dissolution and Inauguration Committee and Deputy Clerk of Parliament, underscored the importance of reinforcing the foundations of democracy in Ghana.
“This upcoming transition represents another significant milestone in our esteemed tradition, and we are resolute in our commitment to facilitate it with utmost respect for constitutional and procedural integrity.
“This transitional phase should embody a sense of solemn responsibility and collective effort. It requires not only administrative effectiveness but also a steadfast dedication to inclusivity, transparency, and national unity.
“This is an opportunity to further fortify the foundations of our democracy, improve the integrity of our legislative processes, and reaffirm our commitment to serving every Ghanaian citizen by making parliamentary activities more accessible to the public.”
He urged for national unity as the transition process commences.
Gifty Twum Ampofo, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, stated that they are working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the election of the Speaker is conducted in a fair and transparent manner.
The election for the Speaker of Parliament is set for January 6, 2025. This election represents a crucial juncture, as it will establish the framework for legislative leadership in the forthcoming term. We are diligently engaging with all pertinent stakeholders to guarantee that this process is executed with fairness and transparency.
In relation to the Presidential Inauguration, she urged Ghanaians to unite in welcoming the newly elected leaders.
“The presidential inauguration, taking place on January 7, 2025, will signify the commencement of a new era in our governance and will also honor our steadfast commitment to democratic principles. We invite all Ghanaians to partake in this significant event as we embrace our new leaders.”
