The Minority in Parliament is calling for the Finance and Education Ministers to be summoned to discuss the outstanding debt of over 100 million Ghana Cedis owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The Minority asserts that this financial obligation has significant repercussions, including hindrances to the routine maintenance of WAEC’s equipment and delays in compensating examiners.
These issues have adversely affected WAEC’s operations and postponed the announcement of the 2024 WASSCE results.
During a session in Parliament, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member of the Education Committee, voiced his concerns regarding the debt’s detrimental effects on education in Ghana.
“Current information indicates that the anticipated release date of 19 December for the 2024 results may be postponed, as examiners are threatening to withhold their scripts if they do not receive their payments.
“Mr. Speaker, in conclusion, I urge you to invite the Ministers of Education and Finance to appear before the house to clarify why the government has been unable to allocate funds necessary for the timely release of the 2024 WAEC results by the target date of 19 December 2024, ensuring that our children are not deprived of the chance to enroll in tertiary institutions in January 2025.”
