The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has expressed strong support for Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the candidate for Minority Leader in the forthcoming 9th Parliament.
In his remarks, the Bekwai MP urged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to recognize Afenyo-Markin’s remarkable grasp of parliamentary procedures and his comprehensive understanding of the leadership dynamics within the House.
Osei Owusu highlighted that the experience and knowledge of the Effutu MP would be crucial in promoting a cohesive and strategic response to the expected significant majority of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament.
“I firmly believe in the value of experience derived from our own actions and inactions. It is evident that during Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s tenure as both Minority and Majority Leader, he distinguished himself significantly, and this was not by chance.
“He began his career as a Chief Whip and advanced to a leadership role. This longevity fosters experience and clarity, which is why I would oppose any suggestion to introduce a new candidate at this time. In my view, Alexander Afenyo-Markin should be allowed to continue in this role.”
Members of the NPP will take their positions on the Minority side of the House when the 9th Parliament convenes on January 6, 2025, following their loss of the Majority in the December 7 elections.
